THE PLACE BEHIND THE ADDRESS

How Wilden took shape

Wilden is a master planned hillside community in the Glenmore Highlands, assembled by the Blenk family in the mid 1990s and built in phases since 2003. About half of its 1,447 acres is kept natural, and a third phase of roughly 1,000 more homes is planned for after 2030.

The ridges between Okanagan Lake and Glenmore Road, long known as the Glenmore Highlands, were pine and grassland above the orchards of the valley floor. In the mid 1990s the Blenk family began buying parcels here, and over about five years they assembled the land that became Wilden. Founder Gerhard Blenk (1940 to 2022) worked with Ekistics Town Planning of Vancouver on an Area Structure Plan that used narrower hillside roads, mixed housing types, a village centre by a pond, an elementary school site and a wildlife corridor. The City folded that plan into its OCP in the 1990s and reaffirmed it in the 2040 OCP. Phase 1 began in 2003 and Phase 2 in 2006. Sales picked up strongly in the mid 2010s, and by 2017 the developer reported fewer than 40 lots left and townhomes sold out.

Infrastructure followed. 4 million for an elementary school site in Wilden Village. The developer now describes the full site as 1,447 acres across 30 neighbourhoods, with roughly half left natural. In March 2026 it outlined a Phase 3 of about 1,000 homes, mixing single family lots, duplexes, townhouses and condos, with 25 km of trails, though that phase is not expected to start before 2030. The hills are also wildland interface. The 2023 Walroy Lake fire started on this side of the lake near the Glenmore Highlands.
