    THE PLACE BEHIND THE ADDRESS

    How Fintry took shape

Fintry’s setting combines a rural lakeside address with a historic estate. Think beyond the view: the everyday journey along Westside Road is a meaningful part of deciding whether this area fits your routines.

The provincial place-name record traces Fintry’s settler history to steamboat captain Thomas Shorts, who arrived in 1883. James Cameron Dun-Waters bought the property in 1909, naming the estate for his family home in Scotland. The record dates the stone house to 1911 and describes an agricultural operation with its own irrigation and power infrastructure. That history helps explain why this lakeshore has both industrial remnants and distinctive estate buildings.

The Friends of Fintry society, registered since 2000, works to research, preserve and share the estate’s heritage. Its activities include restoring buildings and grounds, maintaining archives and offering opportunities to learn about the property. Tours are seasonal: consult the society’s current schedule before planning a visit. For a home search, use the estate as local context, then evaluate the actual address and its services separately.

    The homes & their setting

Investigate the construction date, servicing and ownership structure of each property. A Fintry address is not evidence of park access rights, private beach access or permission for a particular rental use.

Building age, tenure, amenities and permitted uses vary by address. Explore the actual property documents with Elaine and the appropriate specialists.
